Jumpstart to a Healthy Life with Diabetes Worksite Wellness Program
The Nevada Health Care Coalition is the recipient of a National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH) Diabetes Project Seed Grant.
The "Jumpstart" program was launched in December 2008 with the City of Reno and and with the City of Sparks in September 2009. The program was offered to those employees who currently take diabetic medications and/or have elevated (over 7%) A1C levels. This pilot project consisted of 12 one-hour educational sessions at the end of which the program was evaluated. Both employers achieved set program goals. We look forward to offering this program in 2010 to other Coalition employers.
Program Goals
- To reduce program participants Hemoglobin A1C levels to the American Diabetes Association standard of less than 7.0%.
- To increase awareness and management of A1C levels and blood pressure in program participants.
- To increase overall diabetes awareness knowledge, improve self-management behaviors, and help participants become champions of their diabetes and blood pressure health.
- To develop a program that can be easily replicated and offered to all Nevada Health Care Coalition members.

Depression Management in the Workplace Study
The Nevada Health Care Coalition was selected to participate in a Depression Management in the Workplace study. This groundbreaking five year study, through the Colorado Business Group on Health and a research team from Florida State University, with funding from the National Institute of Mental Health, will encourage employers to improve the depression care their employees receive.
The Nevada Health Care Coalition was one of 18 National Business Coalition on Health member coalitions selected from across the country to participate. Coalition member employers will be randomized into one of two state-of-the-art presentations that will demonstrate how employers can improve depression care and treatment for their employees.
